A Dehua porcelain bowl made of translucent white porcelain. Porcelain carving has been known in China since ancient times and reached its perfection during the Tang and Song dynasties. The inside of the bowl is covered with a glossy glaze, while the outside remains matte.
The bowl is lightweight, with thin walls that are translucent in the light. The rim of the bowl is slightly bent to prevent burns to the fingers. The carving on the bowl represents one of the Four Great Beauties of China - symbols of the beauty, wisdom and influence of women in Chinese history.
The inscription 贵妃醉酒 translates as "Drunken Beauty" and refers to the character of Yang Guifei, popular in Chinese literature and drama. The scene on the bowl depicts the moment when Yang Guifei, waiting for the emperor at a garden banquet, plunges into sadness upon learning that he has chosen another concubine. Feeling sad and betrayed, she drinks wine alone, and this scene conveys her deep feelings, making Yang Guifei even more captivating.
